[ thunder ] cnn's erin mcpike is in wichita. how much snow do you have and how much is coming? and karen mcginnis in the weather center. what do you see, erin? >> reporter: well, you know, right now we think we have about 8 inches. i'll show you here, we have a ruler. so, yep, that's looking like about 8 inches. but the snow stopped a couple hours ago, so now we have the effects of it, which if you want to look over here, we still got somebody digging out his car, and we're going to try -- you can see that snowplows have come by. we basically made a median out of the snow, there's big heaps of snow. so it has piled up one but the effects we have to tell you about, there are power outages in the southwestern part of the state. people need to be aware. no fatales. everybody should stay off the road. all major universities, school districts and the government is closed. basically the business of kansas has shut down today, the governor sam brownback declared a state of emergency. we think snow might be over, we might get more toni

can't get to her. it's a mess everywhere, so highway 49 is actually blocked right now. >> erin mcpike is in wichita, kansas and meteorologist jennifer delgado is at the cnn weather center. we start with you erin, it stopped snowing for a little while at least right? >> reporter: it looks like it has stopped, yes, however, the governor of kansas, sam brownback did declare a state of emergency here because we have seen a lot of snow pile up in the last four hours or so. we've got somewhere between 6 to 8 inches. if you can check out over here a little bit, obviously you can't see the road but also we've seen snowplows go by all morning long eight to ten times making a median, big eepz of snow theheae middle, a huge mess. carol one of the interesting things about this snowstorm is that it's thunder snow, we have some video from earlier this morning of lightning and thunder with that snow. we'll play that here for a second. i guess you can see it. and because of this snow, so much of the state is shut down today, most of the universities are closed, lots of public schools, the governm

stuck, too. we are covering it all. cnn's erin mcpike is in kansas city, missouri, and meteorologist jennifer delgado is tracking the storm in our weather center. let's begin with erin in the nation's heartland, good morning, erin, it looks terrible. >> reporter: good morning, carol. we're getting about two inches of snow an hour, but what i want to tell you are the power outages. we talked to kansas city power and light all morning and the power outages have doubled and tripled since we first started talking to them, up to 35,000 power outages just in the kansas city metro area. there are also about 10,000 power outages in texas and another 10,000 or so in oklahoma. that's a problem for those getting heat so that's something to watch out for. also around me it's getting harder to see if you can look a little bit behind me here you don't see very many cars on the road. however the cars that we have seen have gotten stuck, one of them rolled down the hill so it is very dangerous. we also know from kansas governor sam brownback that there was a second death in this storm reported last

're covering this for you state by state. erin mcpike got the short straw. she's in kansas city. i've watched you this morning as you've been getting hit with driving slow and it looks line a slushy mess behind you. how are things? >> reporter: well, that's right. the snow has been really bad, but it's finally let up as you can see. roads were treacherous if a while, but lots of snowplows coming by. but for as thick a layer of ice as we hd eaad earlier, you can things getting better. the big story is the power outages. already in kansas city there are 45,000 power outages in this area. 10,000 in texas. thousands more in oklahoma. that's the big problem obviously because it's cold out and people need to have heat. they need to have their power. >> that's just a thick messy snow, not the easy stuff that you can get rid of. the kind of stuff that's hard to shovel. >> well, it is really hard to shovel. and the other thing is that there are some traffic lights up the street that are actually covered in snow and you can't tell which light is lit. but the heavy snow is snapping power lines and that'

this morning. erin mcpike is in wichita, kansas. jennifer delgado is live at the cnn weather center in atlanta. erin, let's start with you. how's it looking? >> reporter: well, it's not quite as heavy as it was last hour but it's still pretty heavy. we've seen snow plows go by here about six times in the last two hours and the roads are still covered. also we've got this ruler, we've been measuring. about an hour ago it was 4 inches. now we're at 5 1/2. but soledad, here's the interesting thing about this storm. we're calling it a thundersnow. there's thunder and lightning that goes along with it. i wish it would happen when i'm out here but i think we've got video, so let's play that video. i don't know if you can hear it. and that's why we're calling it the blizzard of oz. we've seen that a lot on twitter from some people in kansas, so we want to name this storm the blizzard of oz, soledad. >> i thought thundersnow was dramatic enough. let's get right to jennifer d delgado on where the storm is going to head next. >> right now we are watching the storm system and, soledad, this is awe huge o
